Hungary has recently completed its broadband development project, resulting in the availability of superfast internet across the majority of the country. This means that almost 97% of households in Hungary now have access to advanced network connectivity.
Achieving Internet Speed Targets
Under the EU's Digital Agenda and the National Infocommunications Strategy, Hungary aimed to ensure that by 2020, every household had access to internet speeds of at least 30 Mbps, with at least 50% of households having access to speeds of 100 Mbps. To meet these targets, the Superfast Internet Program (SIP) was launched, which involved the creation of a national geo-spatial electronic communications database to manage the tendering process for network development.
Network Coverage and Infrastructure Expansion
By 2020, Hungary had achieved over 95% coverage of its 30 Mbps fixed internet network, with full coverage achieved through the addition of a special mobile service. The country also surpassed the two-thirds threshold for households with gigabit access by the end of 2022. This achievement was made possible through the laying of 22.5,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cables and the construction of 8.3,000 kilometers of new infrastructure.
Benefits and Recognition
Endre Spaller, President of the Governmental Information-Technology Development Agency (KIFÜ), stated that the success of the project not only enhances broadband networks but also contributes to the development of Hungary's digital infrastructure and economy. As a result of these achievements, Hungary is ranked 8th globally in the OECD's average download speed ranking.
5G Automotive Project in Budapest
In addition to the broadband development project, Vodafone and Bosch have announced a collaboration to launch a 5G automotive project in Budapest. This initiative aims to explore the potential of 5G technology in the automotive industry and further enhance connectivity and innovation in Hungary.
