Hungarian workers earn among the lowest in EU

Compared to the wages offered by other countries, Hungarian wages are now only acceptable for Asian guest workers, according to Varju. Consequently, those Hungarians wanting to seek better opportunities to live more prosperous lives, have no choice but to work abroad.

Wages earned by workers in Romania and Bulgaria have started to exceed those earned in Hungary in their own countries. This shift is happening slowly, but it is evident. This highlights how Hungary has slipped behind the salaries received by workers in these nations.

It is clear that finding work in another country provides the possibility for better wages and opportunities for Hungarians. This approach, however, leads to a “brain drain” of highly trained individuals and a negative impact on the local economy.

This situation emphasises the need for Hungary to improve their offerings if they wish to keep highly skilled workers and stimulate economic growth.
