Budapest's Opera House is set to make history with the presentation of the first opera written in Hungarian by Péter Eötvös. The opera, celebrating Eötvös's 80th birthday, is a musical theatre adaptation of László Krasznahorkai's novel "The Melancholy of Resistance".
A Different Angle on a Familiar Story
The opera approaches the story of "The Melancholy of Resistance" from a different angle compared to the film adaptation directed by Béla Tarr. It follows the journey of Valuska, a young man who becomes a victim of a manipulative society in the shadow of a stuffed whale.

Péter Eötvös is an internationally renowned composer whose previous works have been performed all over the world. This will be his thirteenth opera, commissioned by the Opera House.
